A report from the food and agriculture organization (FAO) of the United Nations disagrees strongly with Dina Boluarte’s comments about a full 10 Sole meal.
The report highlights the reality for Peruvians. The fact that in 2023 51% of Peruvians experienced food insecurity. Food insecurity means either Peruvians don’t know where there next meal is coming from, or they don’t have the means to meet their nutritional requirements.
By the estimations of the organization, a Peruvian would need to have at least 15 soles just to meet nutritional requirements.
While many in more affluent neighborhoods of Lima may not be able to relate to this reality, the report strongly suggests that not only is food insecurity an issue in the provinces, but also in the capital.
For a country with major agricultural exports, it seems illogical that Peru would have issues with food insecurity. Inflation, which impacted the entire global economy after the Covid-19 pandemic has played a big part in creating some of that food insecurity.
For Dina Boluarte, it further highlights just how out of touch she is with reality in Peru.
That an international organization could provide a report with a conservative estimate of 15 soles for food and Boluarte could be so drastically removed from that number is unfortunate not just for her politics, but for the people she is tasked to lead.
